CHOLESTEROL FACTS
|

Why does our body need it?
Cholesterol is an essential building block for all the cells in our body. Without it, they could not function properly.
Cholesterol is used to make Vitamin D which we need to absorb calcium to build bones and teeth.
Cholesterol is the backbone of hormones like estrogen and testosterone that maintain our reproductive health.
Cholesterol promotes smooth transmission of nerve impulses helping us think and move our muscles.
So what's the problem?
High blood cholesterol is a risk factor for heart disease and many assume that high blood cholesterol levels come from eating too much cholesterol. This is not generally true. High blood cholesterol levels are caused by the saturated fat in the foods we eat. Saturated fat blocks our natural ability to regulate cholesterol in our body. Normally, when we eat cholesterol, our bodies produce less, thus maintaining a healthy balance. When we eat too much saturated fat, this natural balance is disrupted, leading to high blood cholesterol. For healthy cholesterol levels, reduce your intake of saturated fat foods like bacon fat, butter and vegetable shortening.
How much can I eat?
The American Heart Association recommends a dietary intake of cholesterol of 300 mg/day for a healthy individual and 200 mg/day for someone with coronary heart disease. Individuals may choose to eat 1 egg per day if the amounts of other foods eaten that are high in dietary cholesterol are limited. One egg contains between 200 - 215 mg of cholesterol.
Gold Circle Farms
The egg is one of nature's most nutritious foods, but its good reputation has been tarnished by misconceptions about its cholesterol. The truth is, because they contain minimal amounts of saturated fat, eggs do not contribute to high blood cholesterol levels in most people. Consult your dietitian or physician if you are currently being treated for heart disease. In fact, eggs are packed with important vitamins and minerals, high quality protein and all the essential amino acids. At Gold Circle Farms we've made this incredible, economical, and versatile source of nutrition even better with the addition of the important Omega-3 polyunsaturated "good" fat, DHA.
