FDA Announces Qualified Health Claims for Omega-3 Fatty Acids

June 2004: Eggs Have No Impact on Dangerous Cholesterol
Eggs Have No Impact on Dangerous Cholesterol, New Study
Eating an egg a day does not impact the cholesterol particles in the blood most likely to cause heart disease, according to a new study that could play an important role in debunking myths surrounding the role of eggs in the diet. The study, supported by the American Egg Board, measured the influence of a high-cholesterol diet, based on daily egg consumption, on the atherogenicity, or potential to lead to heart disease, of low-density lipoprotein (LDL) particles.
May 2004: DHA Results in Better Attention in Children
Breastfeeding Mothers Taking Martek's DHA Results in Better Sustained Attention in Children
Martek Biosciences Corporation (Nasdaq: MATK) announced today that a study presented at the Pediatric Academic Societies' Annual Meeting in San Francisco, California, showed that five-year-old children whose mothers received a 200mg dose of Martek's docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) for the first 4 months of breastfeeding performed better on a test of sustained attention than those whose mothers received a placebo. DHA is an essential fatty acid naturally present in breast milk, and a key building block of the developing infant's brain and visual system. American women's breast milk levels of DHA are among the lowest in the world because of low DHA intake in the diet. Supplementation of DHA during breastfeeding elevates these levels.
January 2004: Skip the Fish -- Get Your DHA Omega-3 in an Egg
Skip the Fish -- Get Your DHA Omega-3 in an Egg
The recent fish warnings from the FDA have left pregnant and nursing mothers upstream without the means for obtaining certain vital nutrients such as DHA Omega-3, found in cold-water fatty fish. New studies show that DHA Omega-3 enriched eggs may be the best option for mothers and babies since they do not pose the same health risks associated with certain long-living, large fish, such as king mackerel, shark, swordfish, tilefish, and tuna.
December 2003: FDA to Warn Pregnant Women to Limit Tuna
FDA to Warn Pregnant Women to Limit Tuna
To protect developing babies from high levels of potentially brain-damaging mercury, the government plans to warn women who are pregnant, nursing, or even considering having children to eat no more than two to three servings of fish each week. And for the first time, federal officials are making specific recommendations concerning tuna -- second only to shrimp as the most consumed seafood in the U.S.

Obstetrics and Gynecology 2003 Study
A Randomized Trial of Docosahexaenoic Acid Supplementation During the Third Trimester of Pregnancy.
Objective: To hypothesize that higher intake of docosahexaenoic acid, an n-3 long chain polyunsaturated fatty acid, would increase duration of gestation and birth weight in the fetuses of US women.
Conclusion: Duration of gestation increased significantly when docosahexaenoic acid intake was increased during the last trimester of pregnancy. The increase in gestation was similar to that reported for interventions with much largers amounts of n-3 long chain polyunsaturated fatty acids.
